dLombard, Carole1908╨1942actorBorn on October 6, 1908, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Jane Alice Peters grew up there and, after her parents╒ divorce in 1916, in Los Angeles. Her mother enrolled her in the Marian Nolks Dramatic School, and at the age of twelve she won a part in the motion picture The Perfect Crime. She graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1924 and was quickly put under contract by the Fox Film Corporation. After a part in Hearts and Spurs, a 1925 Buck Jones western, she appeared with Edmund Lowe in Marriage in Transit under her new name, Carol (changed in 1930 to Carole) Lombard. An automobile accident a short time later interrupted her career until plastic surgery largely erased a disfiguring facial scar. In 1927╨1928 Lombard first displayed hints of her comedic talent in a series of Mack Sennett two-reelers. She then worked briefly for PathÄ and later free-lanced in such films as Ned McCobb╒sDaughter, Big News, High Voltage, and The Racketeer all in 1929, and Fast and Loose and The Arizona Kid in 1930. In 1930 she signed with Paramount Pictures. After a few wasted films she began to find her mÄtier in such comedies as Man of the World, 1931, No Man of Her Own, 1932, Twentieth Century, 1934, The Gay Bride, 1934, Hands Across the Table, 1935, The Princess Comes Across, 1936, and My Man Godfrey, 1936. By the time of the last film she was a star and the leading female exponent of the ╥screwball comedy╙ genre. Her film character played her own slender blond beauty against the breezy, earthy, wisecracking realism and great energy that audiences came to love. True Confession, 1937, Nothing Sacred, 1937, Fools for Scandal, 1938, In Name Only, 1939, Made for Each Other, 1939, and They Knew What They Wanted, 1940, continued her great popularity. Lombard╒s marriage to William Powell in 1931 had ended in divorce in 1933, and in March 1939 she married Clark Gable. They made one of Hollywood╒s most popular and publicized couples. She took fewer film roles in order to learn to share Gable╒s taste for outdoor life. They were noted hosts to the film colony, and Lombard was widely known as a practical joker and a raconteur of considerable talent. Shortly after the completion of To Be or Not to Be, 1942, she undertook one of her many cross-country promotional tours on behalf of war bonds.
